Though more needs to be done to overcome this perception.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The DT report suggests many budding engineers&amp;nbsp;unsuccessfully apply to oversubscribed schemes&amp;nbsp;at blue-chips, are unaware of other opportunities, so drift into other sectors, 14% went into retail for example.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So is the problem one of awareness of opportunities?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Awareness by students that there are plentiful opportunities in the SME sector?&lt;br /&gt;Awareness by the SME sector on how to engage with the&amp;nbsp;student community?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Several&amp;nbsp;schemes exist to forge this link from as early as Year7 onward. Data was provided from 3 sources:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;1. Their internal CRM system (35% of total records)&lt;br /&gt;2. A market related database (45% of total records)&lt;br /&gt;3. From a trade association for the target customer group (20% of total records)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;em&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Analysis of the results for each&lt;/strong&gt;:&lt;/em&gt;&lt;br /&gt;1. The internal data was the least accurate, containing most 'dead' accounts and contacts plus mis-spellings of company and contact names.&lt;br /&gt;2. The market related data was most general, resulting in the highest 'Not Interested' count.&lt;br /&gt;3. The trade association data was most accurate, provided the highest % of 'Sales Visit' requests with no 'Unable to Contact'.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;&lt;em&gt;&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;&lt;em&gt;What can be learnt from these results?&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;1. Well maintained, accurately targeted data provides for best results.&lt;br /&gt;2. Care needs to be taken over input of internal data - training and reminders to all users is of benefit.&lt;br /&gt;3. He recalled the introduction to his first combat flight, where he was told to 'follow that chap, fly over over Dungeness, and, if you see any planes with a black cross on them, fire at them'. &lt;/div&gt;&lt;p&gt;Geoffrey soon learnt how to fly, most memorably not to fly in a straight line for more than 20 seconds, to reduce the risk of being caught out by the enemy.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Lessons from this?&lt;/strong&gt;
